Populix partnered with the Tifa Foundation and the Safe Journalism Consortium to develop the 2024 Journalist Safety Index, a nationwide study assessing the welfare and safety of journalists in Indonesia.

Supported by the Netherlands Embassy, this research provides data-driven insights to inform policy and strengthen public awareness on press freedom.

The findings have been widely shared through media coverage, academic discussions, and public forums to encourage a safer environment for Indonesian journalists.

Overview

In collaboration with the Tifa Foundation, Populix served as the research partner for the 2024 Journalist Safety Index, a joint initiative under the Safe Journalism Consortium with PPMN and HRWG, supported by the Netherlands Embassy. This marks the second year of partnership following the successful launch of the 2023 index.

Objectives

  • Assess the welfare and safety conditions of journalists across Indonesia.
  • Raise public and policy awareness on the need to protect journalists and uphold press freedom as core pillars of human rights and a democratic society.

Our Approach

Populix designed and conducted a national survey involving 760 active journalists across regions. The findings were shared through a comprehensive dissemination strategy, including public discussions, media briefings, press releases, and social media engagement.

Key Outcomes

  • 50+ participants attended the public discussion, including representatives from the Presidential Communications Office, academics, media organizations, and other key stakeholders.
  • 200+ media publications amplified the report’s findings nationwide.
  • 60+ UGC articles from academics’ perspectives extending the public dialogue on journalist safety and welfare.

Client Testimonial

“From 2023 to 2025, Populix has served as a strategic partner to Jurnalisme Aman–Tifa Foundation in developing the Journalist Safety Index. We collaborated with Populix for their extensive experience in social research, methodological expertise, and data-driven approach. Their contribution has enabled us to produce a comprehensive and credible index that reflects journalist safety across Indonesia.

Populix ensured our respondents included journalists and media communities from across the country, resulting in findings that are both representative and trusted by the public.

The Journalist Safety Index is more than a research product; it is an essential tool for journalists, media organizations, policymakers, and others concerned with press freedom, democracy, and human rights. Importantly, this index also complements the Dewan Pers’ Press Freedom Index, offering a more complete picture of both the state of media freedom and the safety of those working within it.

Our collaboration with Populix supports our mission to provide data that informs policy decisions and fosters a safer environment for journalism in Indonesia.”
